July and August are usually quiet months in nature conservation but there seems to be a lot going on around Binfield:
- Thanks to everyone who has been surveying Wicks Green, Blue Mountain and Foxley Fields. We are getting a better understanding of the breadth of flora and fauna that makes its home in our village and have already found a few rarities. Painted lady butterflies have been spotted but not in the numbers predicted by the media. - Warfield Environment Group conducted their first waterway survey along the River Cut to try and find daubentons bats. We joined them with the BEG bat detectors to learn about the survey methodology. The data is still being analysed, but we have a definite record of a myotis species, we just need to work out if it was a daubentons or something else. - Thanks again to everyone who has been litter-picking around the village. We will be running another community litter-pick with the help of Binfield Parish Council on Saturday September 21st. We will also be assembling a small number of bat and bird boxes at Foxes’ Den. - Finally, we have agreed to adopt Mosses Path (the footpath between Binfield Football Club and Stubbs Hill). We will be trying to keep it clear for walkers and horse-riders. I spent yesterday afternoon cutting back brambles, blackthorn, birch and nettles. The path is now useable again (but not in shorts and sandals). Please use it as that will help keep it open.
